ICBE-2013, A special focus on Bioproducts for disease management
The Department of Biotechnology conducted an International Conference on Bioengineering in association with Captain Srinivasa Murthy Drug Research Institute for Ayurveda & Siddha Drug Development (CSMDRIA), Arumbakkam, Chennai, Society of Biological Chemists (SBC), Chennai Chapter and IET REC student chapter, Chennai from 02-04.01.2013.
ICBE-2013 was focused on four main themes: (1) Latest trends and modern aspects of the synthesis of bioproducts and their utilization in life science research, (2) To discuss the development of Ayurveda, Siddha, Homeopathy and Unani (ASHU) drugs, their importance, safety and related technology incorporation for disease management, (3) To expose local researchers and students to various fields associated with this conference, (4) Potential collaboration with scientists in developing phytomedicines, drug design and bioengineering tools related to health care.
The subspecialties of the Conference included Biosensor, Fuel cell technology, Bioremediation, Cell signaling, Biomaterials, Neuroendocrinology, drug targeting, Biomedical Instrumentation, Bio signal processing, Food safety, Nutraceuticals and value addition.

Acceptance of Draft Genome announcement by our department in collaboration with West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata
Ms. Sujata Roy, Assistant professor in Department of Biotechnology, Rajalakshmi Engineering College has been participated and contributed to the Draft Genome Announcement of a 1) nitrate and phosphate removing Bacillus sp WBUNB009 and 2) a phosphate accumulating Bacillus sp WBUNB004 in collaboration with Dr. Shaon RayChaudhuri West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata.
Dr. V.Gayathri published a paper entitled “Histological Alterations in the gills of Tilapia mossambicus exposed to Kerosene in International Journal for Biotechnology.
Two students from final year, Kiruthika and Lavanya under the guidance of Ms.L.Sowmya, Lecturer Biotechnology have published a paper in the International Journal of Medicobiological Research.
Ms. Rekha Ravindran along with Ms.Jamuna Devi and Dr.Johanna Rajkumar published a paper entitled “Invitro antioxidant activity of an ancient amber based formulaton Ambrex ABI” in Indian Journal of Modern Science and Engineering.
Ms. Miilicent Mabel published a paper entitled “Antibacterial Activity of selected seaweeds against shrimp pathogens (Vibrio Harvey &Vibrio paralyticus)” in Indian Veterinary Journal , November 2012.
Dr. P.Rajasekar published two papers of which the one entitled “ Hepatoprotective action of celery (Apium gravelona) leaves in acetoaminophen fed fresh water fish Pangasius sutuchi.” In Fish Physiology and Biochemistry journal and the other paper entitled “ Green synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles using aqueous extract of Andrographic panuiculata and its antimicrobial activity in Asian Pacific journal of Tropical Biomedicine.
Dr.M.Subash Chandrabose published three papers entitled “ Study of mesenchymal stem cell from umbilical cord tissue - a promising approach to human future” and “Identification of toxicity mechanism through the relationship between Chemical exposure and change in genome- wide gene expression pattern by using bioinformatics tools and databases “ in Journal of biotechnology and biomaterials and “Effect of Titania Nanoparticles as Additive on Cellulose Acetate Blend Ultrafiltration Membranes and Performance” paper in International Journal of Engineering Research and Technology
We are happy to share with you that 3 ICMR grants were recommended for funding for a total amount of Rs. 1.47 crores to Dr.S. Mohammed Ali.

Ms. Nandinee Giri and Ms. Sunnontha N from IV year Biotechnology B won second prize in the NICHE 2012 Fujio Cup Quiz organized by NCRM National Centre for Regenerative Medicine on October 09 2012
III year Biotechnology students went to Dr.Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre, Taramani on 11 &12.10.12 and II Biotechnology students went to Armats Biotek Ltd.,on 01.10.12 for the industrial visits.
Innovative Project Cell (IPC) of the college organizes i Quest – a contest for innovative ideas and projects every year for the benefit of the students.
The Staff members Dr.N.Parthasarathy, Dr.V.Gayathri , B.Vijaya Geetha and Ms. Millicent Mabel attended NICHE 2012 – A symposium on Stem cell therapy and Regenerative medicine organized by NCRM National Centre for Regenerative Medicine on October 09 2012.
Dr.R.Jayasree, Ms.Rekha Ravindran, Ms. Millicent Mabel and Ms.S.Vimaladevi and the students of I M.Tech went on three days training programme in “Recent advances in Molecular Biology Techniques” at Frontier Lifeline Hospitals in the month of October 2012 (16.10.12-18.10.12).
Our department collaborative research work with the Central Leather Research Institute and The Care and Cure Laboratories, Chennai was finalized in the month of December 2012.
A tie up had been made with The Banyan organization for the periodic screening of water and waste to ensure hygienic and infection minimized environment in the month of November 2012.
Collaboration initialization with Care and Cure Company, Dr.B.Jayachandran Dare, Director, JESSE Institute and CLRI was done in the month of December 2012.

Our department is organizing an International Conference on Bioengineering – A special focus on Bioproducts for disease management from January 2-4, 2013. In this regard, Dr. S. Mohammed Ali applied for three funding agencies like Ayush Department, CSIR and DBT. We had received Rs.2,00,000 (Rupees Two lakhs only) sanctioned by Ayush for this International Conference.
Our department in collobration with Jc-Ed Institute for Science Scholars Enrichment and Society for Biological Chemists (SBC of India) conducted a Workshop on “Introduction to the use of Vivarium” on 20th and 21st August 2012.
We have peoduced excellent University Examination Results of which we would like to highlight Ms.Poornima of II B topper in second semester with a GPA of 9.88 and 100% results produced in I A section.
Dr.A.Saraswathi, Director, Captain Srinivasamurthy Drug Research Institute (CSMDRIA) gave a Guest Lecture in the topic “Importance of phytochemicals in human life” on August 13, 2012.
Hands on Training on Phytochemistry was arranged for the final year students in Captain Srinivasamurthy Drug Research Institute, Chennai on 16 & 17 August 2012.
Dr. Rukmini Kumar, Industrial consultant for the Biopharmceutical Industry delivered a lecture on “Modelling and simulation in biopharmaceutical R & D for the Staff members of Biotechnology.
We are submitting 5 proposals for the Tamilnadu State Council for science and Technology student projects. In addition one proposal is submitted by Dr.N.Chakravarthy, Lecturer , Biotechnology.
Four proposals have been submitted for funding to AICTE which includes two RPS, one ModROB and one FDP programmes.
Dr. Johanna Rajkumar and Dr.N.Parthasarathy went as invited speakers for the National Conference on Biochemistry in Justice Basheer Ahamed College, Chennai on 24.08.2012.
Dr. R.Jayasree attended a workshop on “ Recent Trends in Medical Biotechnology” at Dr. MGR University & Research Institute and Industrial Seminar on “Emerging trends in diagnosis and therapy” conducted by Ethiraj College For Women in July 28 and August 2 2012 respectively.
Ms. Sabarunisha Begum attended the one day seminar on “New outcome based accreditation” held at Anna University on 29.06.2012.
Ms. Sujatha Roy attended DBT sponsored “BIRAC, DBT Twin workshop of grant writing and strategic Management of IPA” on 17th & 18th August 2012.
Dr.S.Mohammed Ali attended the International Comference on “Material Science And Technology (MST 2012)” held at St. Thomas College, Pala on 10.05.2012.
Dr.S.Mohammed Ali went as invited Speaker for the Seminar on Grant Writing at Dr.M.G.R Medical University which was held on 10.05.2012.

Prof.Jonathan Bacon, University of Sussex, UK visited our campus on 29th November, 2012. (Jonathan Bacon is Professor of Neuroscience in the School of Life Sciences, University of Sussex, UK, and is Adjunct Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Neuroscience, University of Arizona, and Tucson).
